Opening day of Williams Carnival, held at Lake Placid, N.Y. Feb. 19 and 20, began with a 10K individual start for both the men and women.
Junior Lydia Streinz of Hersey led the Owls with a 32nd place performance. She was followed by teammates Hilary Saucy in 39th and Valentina Annunziata in 65th. On the men’s side, freshman Connor Hyrnuk of Boonville, N.Y. put forth his best result of the year with a 48th-place finish. Freshman Ian Marshall of Saco also competed and raced to 68th.
The second day of races followed the pursuit format, as racers started the race in the position in which they finished the day prior. Streinz continued her excellent weekend skiing up to 26th position, good enough for 19th on the day — a new personal best. Saucy and Annunziata held their own, finishing 39th and 62nd.
With rapidly changing conditions, the men skied well on this second day, finishing 48th and 68th on the day.
Coach Joey Bard said, “We had excellent results from Lydia and Connor on the first day, Lydia continued her strong performance on the second day with a new personal best in 19th.
“The tracks began to ice up for the men’s race. Skis were way too slick, but I’m proud of the men for fighting through and finishing as well as they did.”
