‘Bunny hop’ marks Easter, oral health

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Historical Society is hopping with excitement again this year, as the Easter Bunny is partnering with Molly the Trolley, The Aroostook County Action Program and Healthy Aroostook for the 2016 Bunny Hop.

On Saturday, March 26, children of all ages can hop aboard the trolley at ACAP’s office, next to Wal-Mart on Main Street in Presque Isle, for a brief hop around town. While aboard, participants will hear an Easter story and then be returned to ACAP, where they will have their photos taken with the Easter Bunny and receive a small basket filled with healthy goodies.

Volunteers will be decked out in bunny ears, and even Molly the Trolley will get in the spirit in her very own bunny costume. The interior of the trolley will be decorated for Easter and the Tooth Fairy will make an appearance as well.

“The Tooth Fairy, on behalf of ACAP’s Oral Health Program, is ‘egg-sited’ to provide the trolley riders with tooth-ful treasures of brushes and paste in order to help prevent the number-one childhood disease of dental cavities,” said Anne Chapman, ACAP oral health community education specialist. “The Tooth Fairy will also be available for photo opportunities, along with the Easter Bunny, as well as answer questions and provide information regarding the health of our teeth and gums.

”Kim Smith, secretary/treasurer of the Presque Isle Historical Society, stated, “Partnering with ACAP and Healthy Aroostook makes good sense as we need to be more concerned with healthy eating today due to area concerns on obesity and heart health.

“ACAP has a well-established oral health program and Healthy Aroostook’s 5-2-1-0 program focuses on less sugary snacks. Being able to provide healthy snacks and oral hygiene products instead of the traditional candy gives the event a unique and refreshing alternative for parents and children,” Smith said.

Carol Bell, Project Director for ACAP’s Healthy Aroostook, sees the upcoming event as a perfect way to enhance work they are doing with youth in various programs County-wide. “We are very excited for this opportunity to reinforce healthy habits with the 5-2-1-0 message and provide special treats for all to enjoy. What a great way to get our message out to children at a young age to encourage healthy alternatives.

”Advanced ticket purchase is required at $10 per rider. The trolley holds 32 at a time and two “hops” will be held: 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.Tickets are available at ACAP at 771 Main Street during regular business hours.
