MARS HILL NEWS
The Mars Hill Rotary Club met March 15, 2016 at the Aroostook Health Center and the special speaker was Sherry Locke, director of the United Way of Aroostook. She spoke of the Mission of the United Way, which is to mobilize resources to improve the lives of people in our communities.
Their areas of focus include strengthening children and families, supporting seniors, and to promote self-sufficiency and meeting basic needs. They were able to help over 12,000 people in the central Aroostook area last year.
The agency has a board of directors made up of 18 volunteers. Ninety nine percent of all funds raised stays local and only one percent goes to national dues. Administrative costs are only 16 percent.
Fundraising activities include workplace campaigns, which typically cover almost 70 percent of the monies raised, as well as corporate gifts, grants, special fundraisers and the ever popular Northern Star, which usually raises around $30,000 each year.
She said the United Way believes that we all need to work as a TEAM, an acronym for “Together Everyone Achieves More.”
