102 Years Ago – March 19, 1914
New clothing firm — The fine new clothing store of Beaulieu & Gillen, whose building on Bridge St. was recently finished, had its opening on Saturday. It was a somewhat notable business event, among the incidental features lending it additional attraction being selections on a Victrola which were played during the day, and the dispensing of carnations to lady visitors and cigars to gentlemen.
W.R.C. notes — The W.R.C. Ladies had very good success with their food sale Saturday afternoon at B. Nadeau’s. They took in about $11 and could have sold more food, had the supply lasted.
75 Years Ago – March 20, 1941
Control of Cancer Co. Organization to open drive — Miss Susie Thompson of this city, publicity chairman for the Aroostook Division of the women’s Field Army for the Control of Cancer, has announced that the annual financial and educational drive of the organization will begin April 1.
Aroostook Scoutdom on parade — Perry Jackson, executive Boy Scout director of Aroostook County, stated today that final plans had been made for the annual spring Scouting Jamboree to be held in the city next Saturday. Four hundred Scouts and leaders from all over Aroostook will gather in the high school gym, late Saturday afternoon and evening to present to the public an exhibition of Scout games and contests.
50 Years Ago – March 24, 1966
First annual bonspiel — The first annual Friendly Bonspiel will be held in Presque Isle Saturday. Hosted by the PI Curling Club, it will be the first bonspiel to be held in northeastern Maine. The only other curling club at present in Maine is in Belfast, which annually holds the Little International Bonspiel.
Humane Society — The Star City Humane Society held its first annual meeting at the Maine Public Service Operations Center last week. Daryl E. Gaiennie, president, stated his personal belief in a sound humane program for PI and gave a brief report of the progress and aims to date.
25 Years Ago – March 20, 1991
Legislature authorizes ‘Maine Patriot’ plates — The Maine Legislature recently passed a bill authorizing a “Maine Patriot” license plate. The plate, which features an American flag, bordered by the words “Maine Patriot,” can be displayed for one year on the front of any motor vehicle registered in Maine. The Legislature suspended, for one year, the Maine law that requires a numbered plate on the front of all motor vehicles.
PI native recalls Academy stint — Presque Isle native Philip Cormier relives fond memories each Academy Awards season. This year’s awards, slated for March 25, will mark the ninth anniversary of Cormier’s internship at the National Academy of Arts and Sciences. The first student ever to secure an internship at the prestigious academy, he served on the awards night host committee in 1982.
