Makem and Spain
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — “America’s top Irish folk group” Makem & Spain will visit the University of Maine at Presque Isle for a night of music in precise, three-part harmonies on Tuesday, April 5, 2016, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center.
Admission is free but donations for future cultural arts programming will be accepted at the door.
Rory Makem, son of the iconic Irish musician Tommy Makem, is on banjo, joined by brothers Mickey Spain on guitar and Liam Spain on bouzouki.
The performance is in support of their album “Sessions,” recorded with folk legends including Dave Mallett and Jonathan Edwards, and will also feature songs from their newest album, “Four Pounds a Day.”
Community Players
The Presque Isle Community Players will present “Noises Off” by Michael Frayn, April 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. in UMPI’s Wieden Auditorium.
The comedy is presented by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. Joe Zubrick will direct the play and the cast consists of Jeff Ashby, Donato Champagne, Jim Derosier, Tamia Glidden, Linda Gover, Ron McArdle, Mimi Smith, Morgan Swan and Aaron Swanson.
Advance tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for seniors 65 and older and students 18 and under. Tickets are on sale at the information desk at the Aroostook Centre Mall, Goin’ Postal and the Campus Store at UMPI, and will be available at the door. FMI: garymbowden@maine.rr.com.
Spring Runoff
UMPI’s Cross Country team will host its 36th annual Spring Runoff 5K Road Race Saturday, April 9, at Wieden Gymnasium. The event will be open to walkers and runners, with walkers starting at 9:30 a.m. and runners and relay (three-person) starting at 10 a.m.
T-shirts will be given out to the first 60 entrants, courtesy of Aroostook Beverage. This event is open to the public and the cost is $15 U.S. or $20 Canadian for runners/walkers and $25 U.S. or $30 Canadian for three-person relay teams. Other sponsors are Big Cheese Pizza and Pepsi Bottling Group. Pizza and Pepsi beverages will be served in Wieden Gymnasium shortly after completion of the race, around 10:45 a.m.
