102 Years Ago – April 2, 1914
Box social — The Reach School held a box social Thursday night. A very pleasant evening was spent, and the sum of $50 was realized. This will make another payment on the piano recently purchased by the district.
75 Years Ago – April 3, 1941
Easter Ball — The 14th annual Easter Ball sponsored by Lunar chapter, O.E.S., of Presque Isle, will be held at the Northeastland hotel Tuesday evening, April 15. Watie Akins’ orchestra of Old Town will provide the music for the semi-formal affair.
$1,500 fire at Washburn — Fire of undetermined origin totally destroyed a potato house and its contents of 400-500 barrels of potatoes belonging to Henry Davis, four miles out on the Woodland road at 1 a.m. Hindered by lack of water, a high wind and the great headway made by the fire before they were called, the Washburn fire department could be of little assistance. Davis estimated his loss at $1,500 to $1,600 partly insured.
50 Years Ago – April 7, 1966
James Holmes at Wentworth — James Holmes, 68, of Pine Street, PI, has been accepted for admission to Wentworth Institute in Boston for the 1966 -67 academic year. Wentworth, which trains industrial and engineering technicians in a two-year program leading to a certificate or associate in engineering degree, is one of the largest accredited and endowed technical institutes in the United States.
Phone field trip — Zippel school third-graders visited the telephone office with their teacher, Mrs. Marion Fillmore, on a field trip in conjunction with their study on sound, science and language. This is an annual event.
25 Years Ago – April 3, 1991
Selected — Robert E. Kaiser of Carroll’s Auto Sales of Presque Isle has been chosen to serve on the Buick Dealers’ Service Advisory Council, one of 25 representatives selected nationwide. Kaiser, a service technician, has been with Carroll’s for seven years. He has been awarded an all-expense-paid trip for two to Orlando, Fla., where the council will meet April 25-28.
PIHS Shipmates — The PIHS Shipmates Playhouse was to present their play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” by William Shakespeare. The play is an original 40-minute cutting by assistant director Janet Allen. The artistic director is B.A. Frick and technical director is Gene McCluskey. Adult tickets are priced at $2, students $1.
