Percussionist visits

    PRESQUE ISLE, Maine The University of Maine at Presque Isle will host Michael Wingfield, a performer and educator with more than 25 years of experience in the African-Caribbean percussion arts and culture through instruments such as conga drums, bata, shekere, flute, and voice.

Wingfield will spend a busy three days in northern Maine. On Sunday, April 12, 2016, he will present a Community Workshop on African drumming open to all interested participants from 2-4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Houlton. Cost is $20 per person.
He will perform at UMPI on Monday, April 11, at 7 p.m. in Wieden Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the door for future cultural events.
The following day, Tuesday, April 12, he will host a workshop for students in the Campus Center’s Owl’s Nest from 6:30-8:30 p.m. He will work with students from Carol Ayoob’s Experience of the Arts class and other interested students.

Alert Test

    UMPI will sponsor the Alert Test for those interested in a career in law enforcement on Thursday, April 14, from 5-7 p.m. in Folsom Hall, room 303.
A representative from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy will be on campus to administer the test. The test takes approximately two hours and those wishing to take the test will need to bring a valid photo identification. The cost is $50.

Last spring lecture

    The campus will host Jim Keady as their last distinguished lecturer for the spring 2016 semester on Tuesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. in the Campus Center.
During his talk, titled Behind the Swoosh: Sweatshops and Social Justice, he will share stories of his experiences and his decade-long effort to end sweatshop abuses. He spent a month in an Indonesian slum living with Nike factory workers on $1.25 a day — the typical wage paid to the workers — in order to find out what it’s like to live on a sweatshop wage in a developing country.

University Day

    UMPI will celebrate its 15th annual University Day, with the theme “Disrupting the Status Quo.”
The public is invited to attend the free, day-long schedule of activities being held from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
