102 Years Ago – April 9, 1914
Comedy — The Colby Dramatic Club presented the five act comedy, “She Stoops to Conquer” Friday evening in the Presque Isle Opera House. There was an audience of about 300 present. The play was well staged and the costumes especially elaborate and appropriate to the fashions and manner of the age the drama represented.
Poisoning — The dog poisoner seems to be active again. Several valuable dogs have been poisoned lately. If the miscreant who is putting out poison can be detected, no expense should be spared to see that he gets his just desserts in the way of punishment.
75 Years Ago – April 10, 1941
Title — Only the yellow seeded varieties of soybeans are used for industrial purposes. The varieties grown here in Aroostook are Cayuga and Manitoba Brown. They are black seeded and unsuitable for industrial use. No yellow seeded variety, so far, has been found that will mature in Aroostook.
Opportunity missed — A $100 bill lay in a Main Street gutter in Edwardsville for seven hours one day recently, overlooked by hundreds who walked by. Accidentally dropped by a local citizen as he entered his automobile late in the afternoon, it was near midnight before he discovered the spot where he had parked his car, searched the gutter for a few moments and found the bill.
50 Years Ago – April 14, 1966
“Broadway Tonite” — Main street will turn into the Great White Way next Thursday and Friday nights when the Star City Lions Club puts on “Broadway Tonite,” its new musical revue. The show will be a complete departure from the minstrel show which formed the staple format for productions of the past. The new extravaganza will feature songs from “West Side Story,” “The King and I,” “South Pacific,” “The Music Man” and “The Sound of Music.”
Rec Dance — A dance will be held at the Recreation Center, Saturday, April 16 from 8-11 p.m. Music will be furnished by the Mustangs. Admission will be 50 cents per person.
25 Years Ago – April 10, 1991
In the spotlight — Andrea Lynn Sponberg was crowned 1991 Miss Presque Isle during the annual scholarship pageant. The 18-year-old daughter of Murray and Kathleen Sponberg, she competed against six other contestants for the honor and presented a self-choreographed skit for her talent presentation.
Easter donations — Members of the Presque Isle High School Future Business Leaders of America recently donated stuffed Easter bunnies to the patients of Gould Memorial Hospital’s pediatric unit. The bunnies were originally sold to raise money for the group.
