Becoming a Spy

By Julia Bailey
Grade 6
Fort Street District School
Mrs. Johnston

You might not think anyone would follow you around but I’m pretty sure someone’s spying on me. It all started on the first day of school when I heard some weird noise coming from my friend’s locker. It was cracked open. I inched forward, hoping to get a closer look. Just then, Sophie rammed herself against her locker.

“Hi, Allison” Sophie said “What’s up?”
“Sophie! There’s something alive in your locker. What is it? Do you know?”
“No, I don’t think anything alive is in there.” she said, red in the face.
“Are you sure? It sounded like something growling.” I knew I sounded suspicious.
Then the morning announcements came on, so I didn’t get to find out what it was. That ended our conversation. We went on with the day normally, and then we had recess. Everyone ran out the door. I saw Sophia who walked slowly, staring down at her book. She sat down under a tree and read a book. I walked up toward her and immediately she shut her book.
“Hi.” she said, setting the book in the grass.
“I was wondering if you had time to help me study after school, because you’re so good at math and all.” I said.
“Maybe, well I, you see, I’m kind of busy-”
“You can come to my house.”
“Yeah, okay, I guess I have time.”
“Great! See you soon!” and I left.
We were getting ready to go and I had the job of handing out mail. As I did so I heard more growling, and you can guess where it came from, Sophie’s locker. Strange, I thought.
Later on I was walking home with Sophia. She carried her bag in front of her instead of on her back. Then the growling came.
“Sophie!” I said “Listen, do you hear that?”
She glanced at me worriedly.
“Uh, I actually have a cold.” she said, coughing fakely. “I should go home.”(cough)
“But-” I said
“Maybe tomorrow.” (cough)
And she rounded the next corner, leaving me alone. I wondered all weekend about the mysterious growling. Finally monday came. But Sophie wasn’t there. I had an idea, I was going in, like in her locker. Only to look for clues anyway. I am usually a great student, but this really couldn’t wait. So I hid behind the our teacher, Ms. Benson’s, desk until everyone left for lunch. Then the teacher went to go copy some papers, but I knew wouldn’t have long. I was going to have to be quick. So I crept up toward the lockers and Sophie’s locker was closed…
