Authors at work

Presque Isle Middle School

    A parade of students headed to the University of Maine at Presque Isle on Friday, May 1, 2015 for a Young Author Institute workshop.

The annual literacy award was won by Kevin Sipe, a teacher at Presque Isle Middle School who has the respect of many, if not all, of his students, but that was not the only reward handed out that day. All of the young authors were given a book with theirs and other young authors’ writing pieces, as well as an inspiring speech from Mary Cerullo.
During that speech, Cerullo shared with the students some tips to make their writing something to remember. Cerullo herself has written over 20 children’s books.
Some of the tips she gave were included in a PowerPoint presentation. Among the highlights were:
– Show how scientists do their work;
– Show how science can be exciting; and
– Ask why scientists do their work.
Many more of the author’s tips were on her own personal experiences and other helpful advice for students to improve their work.
“Science can be messy,” Cerullo said, just as writing can.
