To the editor:
I have lived in this area for several years now and have been happy here most of the time. When I first came I was in senior/disabled housing for many years and had a nice smoke-free apartment and quiet neighbors in a quiet neighborhood. After eight years smokers were allowed in the building and I am very allergic to smoke of any kind and developed a severe lung infection after they were there one weekend. It took a long time and lots of different medicines to get over it.
I do not understand why landlords say they only smoke outdoors! That is a joke as their clothes are saturated and it permeates the entire building. I was told I would have to move. I was out within a month and moved into a building that was not senior disabled and the couple upstairs made noise all the time and had pets that ran around during the night constantly. The landlord wouldn’t do anything about the noise and after six months there I was told I would have to move again. All I wanted was a nice quiet smoke-free apartment.
I moved out of town a few years ago and ended up in a very nice apartment for four years but once again had very noisy upstairs neighbors and yes, again pets running in the night.
About a year ago I moved back into Presque Isle and have run into the very same problems again. I am a very quiet person and am currently being harassed sometimes day and night by noisy neighbors and animals.
I have some physical problems that are better as long as I can get my sleep which I am not getting once again. Is there a landlord out there who will listen and help me to be able to stay in this area? I am active in community volunteer work and my church and just want peace, quiet and a smoke-free building in a first floor apartment.
This is a very urgent request and my health depends on it. Please help!
