102 Years Ago – April 16, 1914
Bushels of potatoes — The Star-Herald is informed by G. F. Snow, General Agent of the B. & A. R. R., that the B&A delivered 614, 939 bushels of potatoes to Northern Maine Jct. during the week of April 5th to 11th inclusive.
Photography studio — Mr. Ira Beckwith, who has recently moved back onto his farm on the Caribou Road, has opened a photographic studio in Tompkins Hall, Hines Street, where he is prepared to do photographic work of all kinds.
75 Years Ago – April 17, 1941
Nominated — Lawrence J. Hedrich was nominated president of the Presque Isle Lions Club at the weekly session held at the Grange Hall. Other officers nominated were: Ralph Bishop, first vice president; Silas Hanson, second vice president; J. W. Tapley, third vice president; John Pasquale, secretary-treasurer; John H. Wilson, Lion tamer; Arnold Green, tail twister; Forest Wood and Harold Brown, directors for two years.
Elected — Regent, Ann Freeman, has been elected as representative to the State Convention from the Mary Magdalene Circle of the Daughters of Isabella in this city. The convention will be held May 10 and 11 in Brunswick.
50 Years Ago – April 21, 1966
False alarms threaten city lives and property — April 13, the city fire alarm screamed, three fire trucks and 10 firemen raced to a supposed fire in response to a call placed by an anonymous person which turned out to be a prank call. On their way back, the firemen were dispatched to a real fire of a shabby garage and took care of it. The previous year, 8 percent of their calls were pranks, which cost about $5,200 to the taxpayers including loss of work time, and a $50 fine if caught.
Room-Mates Barbershoppers — The annual Barbershopper songfest to be presented April 30 at the PIHS auditorium will feature a foursome called the Room-Mates. Wayne and Blaine are twins, age 16, Gordon 14, and Ralph 11, all sons of Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Atkinson of Fredericton, N.B. They have been singing as quartet about two years.
25 Years Ago – April 17, 1991
Route closed — Floodwaters and huge ice chunks forced officials to close Route 164 between Presque Isle and Washburn Friday and evacuate approximately 15 families in the Crouseville area. Local residents said ice jams raised the Aroostook River to its highest point in recent years. Since the road was not reopened until Monday, citizens had to take alternate routes to PI including the Parsons and State roads.
Coming home — Connie Lavaway, daughter of Adrine and Louise Lavaway of Mapleton, recently sang at Spruce Haven in front of a full crowd including family and friends. This is the first time she has performed in the area. She and members of her country/rock band “Kactus” live and play in and around the Bangor area. Since graduation from Presque Isle High School in 1981, she has performed with several bands, fulfilling her lifelong dream.
