PRESQUE ISLE – Oscar S. Nelder, 89, passed away April 13, 2016. Known for many years as “Voscar, The Maine Photographer”, he was born September 26, 1926, the son of Clarence and Velma Nelder.

Voscar attended the New York Institute of Photography in New York City. Returning home, he owned and operated Voscar’s Studio on Main Street in Presque Isle, and developed his photos in a darkroom set up in the basement of the fire station for 17 years.

Voscar also became employed at WAGM Radio in 1949 as a recording engineer, disc jockey, and host of a children’s radio show which later became a children’s television show called “Hi, Kids.”

Voscar married Darlene Waddell Giles in 1985 and they moved Voscar’s Studio to their home on Hardy Street in Presque Isle.

Voscar was never without his camera. He loved to travel the state and Eastern Canada where he produced stunning images of the land and its people. Whether it was a shot of President Kennedy announcing his candidacy for the presidency or a shot of a stream deep in the Maine woods, his work was loved and appreciated by all who saw it.

Voscar is survived by his wife, Darlene of Presque Isle; a sister, Mona; and a niece, Ruth Ann, also of Presque Isle.

Friends called at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, at the Gray Memorial United Methodist Church in Caribou. A funeral for Voscar followed at 3 p.m. Online condolences may be expressed at www.duncan-graves.com.
