Local varsity track and field squads
participate in first meet of season
The track and field season began for both the Presque Isle and Fort Fairfield squads this past week.
The Wildcats were at Mount Desert Island for a meet on Saturday. The PI boys came in second to the host Trojans, while the girls placed third behind George Stevens and John Bapst. Eleven boys’ teams and 10 girls’ teams participated.
Victorious for the PI boys were Chan Villatora, first in the 300-meter hurdles in 47.12 seconds and first in the long jump at 19 feet, 1-½ inches; Parker Lambert, who won the 110-meter hurdles in 19.73 seconds; Trace Cyr, first in the 400-meter dash in 56.85 seconds; and Connor Murchison, winner of the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches.
Jason Bartley placed second in the 1,600 in 5:07.24. Villatora was also third in the 100 in 12.03 seconds.
For the girls, Maddie Wing won the 1,600-meter racewalk in 11:30.05 for the only individual victory for the Wildcats. The 4×800 relay team of Isabelle Jackson, Olivia Mosher, Madison Jandreau and Mandy Graham came in second in 12:28.39, while Regan Nelson was a big point scorer with a pair of seconds in the discus (100 feet, 10 inches) and the shot put (34 feet, 2 inches) and a third in the javelin (88 feet, 3 inches).
Other top efforts included Graham placing third in the 1,600-meter run in 6:03.44 and Eleanor St. Peter also placing third in the triple jump with a mark of 26 feet, 5 inches.
Fort Fairfield made the trip to Brewer for a meet held Thursday. The Tigers boys tallied 40 points to place fifth out of 12 teams and the girls scored nine points to place 10th out of 11.
For the Tiger boys, Jonah Daigle was second in the 300-meter hurdles in 45.31 seconds and third in the 110-meter hurdles in 17.47 seconds and third in the high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches. Colin Goshorn came in third in the pole vault by clearing 10 feet.
Fort Fairfield’s top scorer in the girls’ meet was Jayden Fox, fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in 19.31 seconds and sixth in the triple jump at 29 feet, 6-½ inches. Marissa Brouette was the other point scorer by placing fourth in the pole vault at 7 feet.
