Moose lottery deadline approaches

    The deadline to apply online for the Maine Moose Permit Lottery is fast approaching, and hunters who want the chance to hunt moose in Maine need to visit www5.informe.org/online/moose/ and complete their online application by 11:59 p.m. May 16, 2016.

The online application process is fast and simple and you receive instant confirmation that you have successfully entered the lottery. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife will hold a chance drawing on June 11 at Kittery Trading Post.

Swim classes offered at Gentile

    The Presque Isle Recreation Center is still accepting pre-paid registrations through Friday for the May 9 to June 18 session of classes. Lessons will be held at Gentile Hall at the University of Maine Presque Isle and there are openings in parent-toddler, PRE 1-3, learn to swim 2-6 and adapted autism classes.
The recreation center’s hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lessons have a $25 fee per participant. Non-residents will have an additional family fee of $50. For more information on classes and to find out times they are offered, call 764-2545 or visit www.pirec.org.

Flag football to begin soon

    Aroostook Huskies Football and SAD 1 have announced that they’ve partnered to start a flag football program for youth in grades 1-6 in central Aroostook County.
Information meetings were held recently, but those still interested in getting involved should go to the Huskies’ website at http://www.aroostookfootball.org and click on the “Contact Us” link on the home page. This will open up an email link that can be used to send a message to the program.

Softball leagues have openings for teams

    Those interested in entering a co-ed or men’s softball team in the Caribou/Presque Isle League this summer should contact Matt Bouchard at the Caribou Wellness and Recreation Department at 493-4224 or matt@cariboumaine.org.
League dues are $550 for the season and must be received by May 13. The season will begin the week after Memorial Day.

Aroostook River Fun Run scheduled

    Registration for the eight-mile canoe and kayak race from Washburn to Presque Isle May 14 runs from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Racers will hit the water at 10 a.m., beginning at Thomas Brewer Park and finishing downstream at the PI Fish and Game Club.
Walkers, runners or mountain bike riders are also welcome to take part on the trail along the river if conditions allow.
A barbecue lunch will be provided after the race to all registered participants. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Ashland Girl Scouts.
