PI softball team’s winning streak reaches six games
They started the season with four straight losses, but the Presque Isle girls have hit a hot streak.
The Wildcat softball team has now won six games in a row after knocking Houlton from the ranks of the undefeated Thursday and then sweeping a home doubleheader against John Bapst Saturday.
“We have hit the ball well and received good pitching,” coach Terry Cummings said of his team’s play the past two weeks. “Even though we have seven freshmen on our roster, we are
gaining confidence every day. I am very proud of what this group has been able to accomplish so far this season.”
PI is now in fifth place heading into Thursday’s game at Caribou and has five games remaining after that one.
At Houlton, Hailey Cameron ripped an inside-the-park homer in the first inning and Savannah Rodriguez’s squeeze bunt broke a 4-4 tie in the top of the fifth, giving PI a 10-4 victory.
In Saturday’s twinbill, PI coasted to wins by scores of 14-2 and 9-2. Amy Seeley hit a grand slam homer in the opener and the Wildcats scored five first-inning runs on the way to the game two triumph. Sydney Thompson and Faith Leavitt each started a game on the mound.
The Wildcat baseball team picked up its third win of the season by besting Bapst in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader. After losing the first one, 16-6, PI rallied from a five-run deficit to come away with a 7-6 win. Sam Gray’s two hits led the Wildcat offense.
The ’Cats were shut out at Houlton Thursday, 6-0.
PI is currently in 12th place in the standings with a big game against Caribou coming up Thursday afternoon.
The Fort Fairfield baseball team tasted defeat for the first time this season after starting 5-0. The Warriors erupted for four runs in the first inning off Tiger starter Carter Bruce and held on for the 9-5 victory. Bruce, Jared Harvey and Isaac Cyr all had RBI singles for FF, the fourth-place team in Class D North.
Ashland won for the first time this season, stopping Hodgdon Saturday, 18-8. The Hornets are now 1-3 after Alex Kaiser and Airin Harmon each had three hits and Tim Tarr scored four runs. The Hawks entered the game with a 6-1 record, so the victory has Ashland all the way up to eighth in the Heal Point standings.
Washburn is in sixth place at 3-2 after downing both Ashland and East Grand/GHCA before losing at home to LCS/MSSM Monday. The Central Aroostook Panthers is also 3-2. They are coming off a busy week which saw them beat both Wisdom and Madawaska and lose to Hodgdon and LCS/MSSM. CA is ranked 10th in the standings.
On the softball diamond, Ashland carries a 5-1 record and is in fourth place in Class D.. Cassidy Pelletier tossed a shutout and led the offense with two hits and two RBIs in Saturday’s 6-0 home win over Hodgdon.
The Hornets beat Washburn last Tuesday before suffering their first loss Thursday by a 13-11 final to Madawaska.
Washburn’s 7-1 loss at home Monday against LCS/MSSM was its fifth in a row to begin the season.
