Shortly after the parade ends, the remembrance ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial Monument in front of the elementary school. Everyone is invited to attend the ceremony and honor those who served in our military and made the supreme sacrifice for our country.
Mapleton Road (Route 163) will be closed during the parade for approximately one hour. The road will be closed from Dudley Road to the Mapleton Elementary School. Eastbound traffic may detour in Ashland to Route 227. Westbound traffic may detour on Garland Road north to Route 227.

Annual Lions dinner

On April 25, the Mapleton Lions Club held its annual awards and recognition dinner with 60 members and guests in attendance. The club was especially appreciative of the attendance of Incoming District Governor Michelle Crocker, Second Vice District Governor Norm Hart and Global Membership Team co-coordinator John Youney.
Crocker assisted Mapleton Lions Club Secretary Terry Sandusky in the induction of new Lion Stephen Eyler. Eyler is the executive director of the Sister Mary O’Donnell Homeless Shelter in Presque Isle.
Jon Frederick, town manager of Mapleton, Castle Hill and Chapman, received the 2014 Lion of the year Award. Frederick was honored for his work on the veterans’ monument, the Lions’ chicken barbecue, the Maple Meadow Farm Fest, Crown of Maine Balloon Fest and several other projects in 2014. Frederick also received the Membership Growth Key from Lions International for the recruitment of two new members.
Hart also presented service awards to Lions Paul Grendell for 25 years of service and Steve Hanning for 20 years of service. Lion Maurice White was unable to attend the ceremony, but was recognized for his 25 years of service.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of the club’s first Melvin Jones Fellow Award to Lion Dale McHatten.
This award is the highest award that Lions International and the Mapleton Lions Club can bestow on a club member. It symbolizes the work of cooperative volunteerism of members to work for the betterment of the local community and the world.
The Mapleton club is entering its 59th year, and McHatten is a 57-year club member who has worked on or supported almost every project over all those years. He has driven the club float in the Memorial Day Parade, which is hosted by the club. He has also braved the inclement weather to hang or take down Christmas lights for the town. He has cooked more hot dogs and chicken than any other member and yet is always ready to advocate for the needs of the community.
Twenty members of McHatten’s family were present to see him receive this outstanding recognition.
At the conclusion of the event, Youney and Hart congratulated President Frank Richards, who is in his last term as club leader. Richards stepped in after the unexpected departure of the previous club president and served three terms.
