102 Years Ago – May 21, 1914

Sale — The Woman’s Auxiliary of St. John’s Church had a food and candy sale at Mr. Larrabee’s drug store on Main Street.

Improvement — R.J. Smith Co., the enterprising house furnishers, made great improvement to their store by installing three large glass show windows in the second story front. The work was done by C. H. Smith, the builder and architect.

75 Years Ago – May 22, 1941

Inspection — E.L. Newdick, chief of the plant industry division, presided at the final meeting at the Northeastland Hotel of state-certified seed potato inspectors. Subjects included bacterial ring rot, quarantine regulations and the inspection service’s new auditing system.

Last meeting — The Mary and Martha Club of the Congregational Church held its last meeting of the year May 15 at the home of Mrs. Edna Smith with Mrs. Alice West assisting. A picnic supper preceded the regular meeting.

50 Years Ago – May 26, 1966

 A check — Senator Floyd Harding presented a check for $73,000 to Carroll J. Foren, president of the Central Aroostook Association for children with mental challenges. The funds went toward construction of new $175,000 facilities for the Opportunity Training Center. The donation represented the first from the state of Maine for construction of such a school.

Humane governor — Daryl Gaiennie, president of the Star City Humane Society, sold Governor John H. and Mrs. Reed a life membership in the society. Reed praised work done by by Star City Society in Aroostook County. Cora Reed, a director of the Maine State Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said she was grateful for opportunity to participate in project she had felt deeply about for a long time.

25 Years Ago – May 22, 1991

In appreciation — School Board Chairman Rodney Leach presented David Lyon, SAD 45 superintendent of schools, with a plaque for work above and beyond the call of duty in his effort to make possible the new elementary school, during the WDES dedication ceremony.

Recognition week — Presque City Council Chairman Brenda Smith signed a proclamation designating the week of May 19-25 as local Insurance Women’s Week in conjunction with National Insurance Women’s Week.
