Meeting swap cuts costs

HOULTON, Maine In a move to shave money from the Aroostook County budget, county administrators have approved a plan to cut down on the number of times they will meet for the remainder of this year and in 2017.

County Administrator Doug Beaulieu said the move could save the county an estimated $10,000 to $12,000 per year, as the commissioners would only have to be paid once per month instead of twice per month.
Beaulieu said he thinks the plan could work, because there have been several times that the commissioners have had to cancel meetings because they have not had enough material on their agenda to hold a meeting.
“We also looked at how some other counties were holding their meetings,” Beaulieu said. “And they were holding their meetings during the day. We took a look at the schedules of the commissioners and decided that it would work if we met at 1 p.m. instead of during the evening, so that is what we are going to do.”
