Events honor vets on Memorial Day
A number of local parades and ceremonies are planned this long weekend to pay tribute to veterans and those who gave their lives for the cause of freedom.
On Sunday, May 29, 2016 Portage Lake will hold its Memorial Day parade, beginning at 11 a.m. Lineup will begin at 10:45 at the Municipal Building for those intending to march.

Presque Isle’s annual Memorial Day Parade will be held Monday, May 30, sponsored this year by the Hawyard-Frazier VFW Post 2599 and the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 10.
Lineup will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the parking lot at the University of Maine at Presque Isle, with the parade starting at 10 a.m.
Along the parade route, a ceremony will be held at the Park Street Bridge to pay tribute to U.S. Navy veterans. Final memorial services will take place at Veterans Memorial Park on Main Street.
Following the parade, the public is welcome to come to the VFW Hall for refreshments.
Later that day in Mapleton, the Mapleton Lions Club will conduct the annual Memorial Day parade and remembrance ceremony. Parade lineup will start at 1:30 p.m. on the Dudley Road and the parade will start at 2, going to Mapleton Elementary School.
The ceremony will follow at the Veterans Memorial Monument in front of the school. All are welcome to attend.
