MSSM students win Envirothon award
LITTLETON, Maine — Maine School of Science and Math students recently accepted the Tim Scott Award from Dotty Dudley as top scorers in the forestry portion of this year’s northern regional Envirothon hosted by the Southern Aroostook Soil and Water Conservation District and held at the Littleton Meduxnekeag Ramblers Club.
Envirothon is a national environmental competition where high school students test their knowledge and solve hands-on problems of natural resources and current environmental issues within wildlife, water/aquatics, forestry, soils, and a current issue.
In memory of forester Tim Scott, the Central Aroostook SWCD has established a perpetual Forestry Award. Scott was a friend to Envirothon and spent many hours teaching students about forest management as well as judging the forestry component of Maine Envirothon. He also served as an associate supervisor for CASWCD.
The MSSM students will display the award for one year at their school after which it will be returned to be awarded to next year’s high scoring forestry team.
MSSM’s student team also received the first place award with Lee Academy second and Presque Isle third. MSSM and Lee Academy will travel to compete at the State of Maine Envirothon competition at Shawnee Peak in Bridgton May 27, 2016.
