102 Years Ago – May 28, 1914
Deafeat — The Training School Seconds defeated the Gouldville Giants on the high school diamond in one of the most exciting games of the season, the final score being 15 to 14 in favor of the Training School.
Big Republican Gathering — The Republican County Committee held a grand political gathering in Presque Isle. Ex-Gov. Kelly, one of the best political orators in the country, Ex-Gov. Cobb, of our own state, and other prominent men were present and addressed the meeting.
75 Years Ago – May 29, 1941
Highest score in 59 schools — Grace E. Wentworth, a senior at Presque Isle High School, earned a scholarship covering tuition for four years at the University of Maine for scoring the highest record among representatives of 59 schools in the state.
Top speaker — Miss Irene Umphrey of Washburn High School took top honors for girls in the annual Aroostook League Speaking Contest, held at Aroostook Central Institute in Mars Hill. Umphrey’s speech, entitled “Rabbits – Plus” was judged by Prof. Mark Bailey of the University of Maine.
50 Years Ago – June 2, 1966
ASC students protest — Aroostook State College students, numbering about 200, hanged a psychology professor in effigy and burned their activities cards in protest against school policies including dress code, lack of a Student Union, girls’ curfew and unfair psych exams. President Clifford O.T. Wieden met with the students and agreed to extend library hours and liberalize weekday curfews for female students. There were no funds available to build a student union but the campus president suggested putting a stereo in the current student lounge.
Dedication — Members of the Presque Isle Country Club formally unveiled a special stone and plaque to honor one of the golf course’s founders, Sidney Cook. Attending were Mr. Cook’s widow, his daughter Mrs. Donald Duncan and her husband and children, Frank Hayes Sr., Ellis Survant, Herman Kirk and Harold Graves.
County track and field champs — Presque Isle High School was vaulted to a third consecutive Aroostook County track and field championship with a double individual win by Billy Glidden in the mile and half-mile runs. Lew Murray took “iron man” honors for PIHS, medaling in four events — broad jump, shot put, javelin and 100 yard dash.
25 Years Ago – May 29, 1991
Successful trip — Members of the Presque Isle Regional Vocational Center’s chapter of Vocational and Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) returned from the annual state competition, held in South Portland, laden with trophies and ribbons. The club won medals in 19 of the 36 competition categories.
Club Leaders — Maine Business and Professional Women Inc. President Caroline Gentile of Presque Isle and Elizabeth Athanasakos, national BPW president, both led activities during the annual state convention held May 31-June 2 in Presque Isle.
