Baseball, softball teams play final season contests

It’s getting crunch time as teams are either fighting to make it into the post-season for baseball and softball or for those who are guaranteed a spot, are trying to finish as high as they can to get a home game for the prelim round or avoid the prelims all together.

The Presque Isle softball team ran its winning streak to nine games by beating Foxcroft Academy, 15-0, in the first game of a doubleheader played at PI Saturday. However in game two, the Wildcats blew a 9-1 lead and lost, 12-9.
PI is currently in eighth place and with wins at Fort Kent (Tuesday) and at home against Caribou (tonight at 7 p.m.), should secure that position and be at home for its first-round Class B North playoff game next week, with Foxcroft the probably opponent in that one.
The Wildcat baseball team was swept in a pair of competitive games against Foxcroft Saturday, 3-0 and 5-4. At 4-10 and currently in the 15th position in Class B North, PI will need to win out against Fort Kent and Caribou to still have any kind of chance to get into the top 12 and reach the post-season.
The Fort Fairfield Tigers are in third place in Class D baseball with their 12-2 record. A meeting with No. 4 Washburn (9-3) this afternoon will most likely determine who gets that No. 3 position and a bye into the quarterfinals.
Despite sub .500 win-loss records, Ashland (6-7) at No. 7 and Central Aroostook (5-8) at No. 12 are almost sure bets to make the playoffs. The Hornets finished up against Wisdom Tuesday and the Panthers’ regular season is complete following Saturday’s one-run home loss to Ashland.
Back to softball, the Ashland girls are in seventh with their 9-4 record and will be home for their preliminary playoff game next week. They concluded regular season play against Wisdom Tuesday.
The 5-7 FF girls will most likely hold onto the No. 13 and final playoff position in softball. They wrap up the regular season against the winless Beavers today.
