‘Mews and Yips’ from the Central Aroostook Humane Society

It’s that time of year again! It is time for the annual Paws for the Cause walk, to benefit the Central Aroostook Humane Society. This year’s walk will take place this coming Saturday, June 4.
Registration starts at 10 a.m. and the walk starts at 10:30. Also, from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, the Presque Isle Animal Hospital will be hosting a rabies clinic. There will be refreshments and door prizes, so come join in the fun!!
Things are busy as usual at the Central Aroostook Humane Society; for over a month the shelter has been pleased that our cat population has been low and we have been able to spay or neuter the cats that we have been housing. In the blink of an eye that all changed. We are taking in 50 cats from a residence. Some of these cats are very ill, and some are in need of medical attention.
How does this happen? It usually happens because someone had good intentions and things got out of control. Barn cats are wonderful, but breeding barn cats can be a nightmare! Or rescuing and not altering can turn something fun and rewarding into an unthinkable situation like this.
Before your situation gets out of hand, please call the Central Aroostook Humane Society. We are here to help and would rather take a mom with one litter than 50 cats, which is a barely manageable number.
It makes me so happy to have warmer weather, and it also makes me very happy to see people and their dogs out enjoying it. Please be aware, if you are out walking or leaving your dog in the car to dash into the store for a moment, your dog is not able to withstand high temperatures.
It is important that your dog’s needs come first, and that he is not put in distress. Hot road surfaces can burn the bottoms of your dog’s feet, a long hard walk can turn into heatstroke, and of course we know every year lives are lost due to dogs being left in overheated cars. You love your pets; be aware.
