Camp to give kids a taste of the past
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Historical Society is gearing up for its second annual Summer History Camp for youth ages 8-12.
The camp will run from Monday, June 27 through Friday, July 1, 2016 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. daily, with lunch provided. The camp’s home base will be Aroostook County Action Program’s Gouldville campus on the corner of Parsons and Park streets.
Only 25 campers will be accepted for this one-of-a-kind adventure. The camp is open to all children ages 8-12, and will offer a safe environment while being fun, informative, educational and interactive.
Participants will be engaged in local history, which will increase their knowledge of the community and sense of community pride. Activities will build social skills, character, cooperation and fair play.
Kim Smith of the Historical Society, who will also serve as camp director, said, “There are even more fun things in store this year! Last year at the end of every day, we asked the campers what they liked best and what they wanted more of.
“We listened! So this year, there are even more fun historical crafts, and we have added a blacksmithing demonstration as well.”
Smith said the camp will be fun, educational, entertaining and interactive. Kids will enjoy physical activity while learning 19th-century children’s games; gain etiquette skills at the etiquette banquet; make crafts such as Victorian Christmas ornaments and candles; visit local museums while travelling aboard the Society’s Molly the Trolley; visit a local farm to better understand the connection between farming, food and clothing; and hear entertaining presentations on Presque Isle and the Civil War, about local ties to national and international history, and much more.
There is a fee for the camp and space is limited, so campers should register early.
