Taveras takes first in javelin at States
Washburn’s Jovanni Taveras picked up a championship in the javelin throw and the Fort Fairfield Tiger boys had the best showing among local teams at high school track and field state meets held Saturday.
The Class C competition was held in Dover-Foxcroft, with the Beavers and Tigers representing central Aroostook County in that one. Taveras had a throw covering 153 feet, 2 inches to win by 18 inches over his closest competitor, Abel Bryer of Boothbay. He was the eighth and final qualifier in the prelims, but came through with the best throw of the event in the finals.
Freshman Jonah Daigle had a strong overall meet for Fort Fairfield. He took third in the 110-meter hurdles in 16 seconds, fifth in the 300 hurdles in 43.03 seconds and sixth in the long jump at 19 feet, 7.25 inches. Colin Goshorn, Daigle’s teammate, placed fourth in the pole vault by clearing 11 feet and he was also fifth in the 110 hurdles (17.22 seconds). Landon Kinney tied for sixth in the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches).
As a team, the Tigers scored 19.6 points, placing them 12th out of 35 teams.
Neither Fort Fairfield or Washburn athletes placed in the girls’ meet.
In Class B, held at Mount Desert Island, Presque Isle’s Regan Nelson was sixth in the shot put at 33 feet, 6 inches and seventh in the discus at 97 feet, 11 inches, while Tori Koch placed sixth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1::01.61. They were the lone point scorers for the Wildcat girls.
In the boys’ meet, Jonah Clark was seventh in the 1,600-meter racewalk in 8:08.04 as the only PI athlete to place in an event.
