PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Presque Isle High School’s 2016 Dirigo Boys and Girls State delegates are currently attending the annual program and learning about aspects of government. The program began June 19 and will end June 25, 2016.

Participants Emma Beaulieu, Grace Player and Macy Pyres are at the Girls State event at Husson University in Bangor, while delegates Nick Bartlett and Marcus Ouellette are at Thomas College in Waterville for Boys State.

Dirigo Girls State is taking place at Husson University in Bangor, and Boys State is at Thomas College in Waterville.

The programs are one-week summer events sponsored by the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary. Students learn about state government, responsible citizenship and how local, county and state governments function through a mock Dirigo State government.

The delegates participate in mock elections, bill hearings and legislative sessions.

PIHS officials said the Presque Isle Elks Lodge 1954, Presque Isle Rotary Club and the Dead River Company provided financial support for the student delegates.
