FORT FAIRFIELD, Maine — The Frontier Fish and Game Club, located on Monson Pond, hosted a youth fishing derby June 18 with 50 taking part to try to catch the largest brook trout.
A total of $1,000 was awarded to the winners in two age categories: 12 and under and 13-18. An additional prize was awarded to the person of any age catching the largest number of hornpout.
Jeremy Thibeault took first place in the 12 and under age group and Wyatt Chambers took the second and third place prizes. In the 13-18 category, Jonathan Bernard was first, Jared Harvey second and Alec Comeau third.
Nicole LeSuer caught 39 hornpout to win that category.
“I hope we can make this even bigger next year,” said Kerby Doughty, club president. “Everyone I’ve talked to has been really happy to be here.”
Many participants stayed from the 7 a.m start to the 8 p.m. finish time. Although many were tired and sunburned, there were many happy faces at the awards presentation.
The club partnered with local businesses and organizations to award the prize money.
“We’re really grateful for the help of our sponsors,” said James Smith, vice president of the club. “They helped make these priceless expressions on these kids’ faces.”
