VERNON, VT & MAPLETON — Edwin Howard Carter, 89, of Vernon is asleep in the Lord as of June 13, 2016; born to Harvey and Hazel (Carvell) Carter in Mapleton, on March 4, 1927.
Edwin graduated from Mapleton High School in 1945. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Army and was sent to Italy to assist in the return of prisoners of war to Germany. Upon discharge from the service, he attended Aurora College in Aurora, IL, and New England School of Theology in Boston, MA.Â
Edwin married his sweetheart, Mary E. Parks of Washburn, on June 28, 1949. His life’s work was service to his Lord as a pastor, being ordained in the Advent Christian denomination. Edwin served churches in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont and Nova Scotia with ministry extending to a children’s camp in Virginia, Camp ACCOVAC, as well as manager of Vernon Hall in Vernon, VT.Â
He was predeceased by his brother, Gerald Carter.
He is survived by his wife, Mary E. (Parks) Carter of Vernon; their four sons, Paul Carter and his wife, Glennis of Stockholm, ME, William Carter and his wife, Barbara of Duxbury, VT, Philip Carter and his wife, Gloria of South Portland, ME, and Calvin Carter of Redmond, OR; as well as eight grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and many special friends.Â
A celebration of life was held on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at the Vernon Advent Christian Church, 4554 Fort Bridgman Rd., Vernon, VT. Burial followed at Tyler Cemetery in Vernon. A second celebration was held at 2:30 p.m. at Vernon Hall, 61 Greenway Dr. The Ker-Westerlund Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
