102 Years Ago – July 2, 1914
Hot action on the courts — Two games in the the Tennis Tournament had been played, George Larrabee winning from Wilfred Thompson 6-2; 6-4; 6-4 and Willie Jenkins proving a victory over Donald Southard, 6-0; 6-0.
75 Years Ago – July 3, 1941
Dr. Walker named chairman Military Affairs Committee — Dr. F.S. Walker was appointed chairman of the Military Affairs Committee of the Maine Dental Society at the organization’s 76th annual convention at Portland. Previous to attending the Portland assembly, he was in Augusta attending to his duties as a member of the State Dental Examining Board. He was accompanied by Mrs. Walker on the trip.
Mills resigned — Miss Winnifred Mills resigned from her position as bookkeeper at the city office after 20 years. Miss Helen Kimball had been hired to fill the position.
50 Years Ago – July 7, 1966
GOP official — John R. Shaw of Caribou was elected Aroostook County Republican Finance Chairman. He attended Caribou High School and the University of Maine and spent two years of active duty in the U.S. Army Finance Corps; as well as treasurer of Caribou Motor Co., and secretary of the Caribou Republican Town Committee.
The big move — Twelve boxes of non-fiction books were transported from Presque Isle Library’s temporary Industrial Park site to the new $250,000 library building on Second Street. Mrs. Anne Stimpson, librarian, and staff of four part-time helpers, began the move with non-fiction books which were in less demand when school was not in session.
25 Years Ago – July 3, 1991
Mapleton softballers place second — P.L. Willey of Caribou overcame an earlier loss to the Mapleton Merchants and defeated them twice in the championship to take the title during the Caribou Invitational Men’s Softball Tournament. After losing by a 9-8 score in the ‘winner’s bracket’ contest, P.L. Willey came back to oust Miller’s Discount of Caribou, 15-8, before dropping the Merchants by scores of 4-3 and 16-8.
Walk-A-Thon for cancer — A group of Washburn girls held a walk-a-thon to benefit the American Cancer Society, and raised $210 for that purpose. Participants were Bobby Jo Rowbotham, Charity Rowbotham, Amy Allen, Kristen Fitzgerald, Amanda Umphrey, Cassidy Tarbox, Trina Akerson, Sue Tarbox, Rachel Rand and Jeanice Searles.
