102 Years Ago – July 9, 1914
Candidates meeting — Hon. Oakley C. Curtis, Democratic candidate for governor, and Hon. Chas. W. Mullen, candidate for Congress, met the Democratic candidates on the Aroostook County ticket and also the town and county committees in conference at Caribou.
Hard battle — A hard-fought battle between the Town Team and the Mooseleuk baseball team, after eight innings were played, resulted in a score of 13 to 9 in favor of the Town team.
75 Years Ago – July 10, 1941
Local Junior Legion — In the opening tilt of the Aroostook Junior Legion playoffs, Mars Hill tagged a 9-to-2 defeat on the Presque Isle club. Righthander Frank Weeks baffled the local entry the entire route, striking out 17 and giving up five scattered singles. Tuck went the complete way for the Williams-mentored nine and was nicked hard for 13 safeties.
Contribution — Manton L. Porter, Proprietor of Porter’s Aroostook Lodge on the Houlton Road, received from the Canadian Minister of Finance Office a letter thanking him for a gift of $20 for the R.C.A.F. The amount was raised by taking a certain portion of money from the meal revenue during a week’s run of business.
50 Years Ago – July 14, 1966
Adams appointed Skyway Head — Richard Adams, 35 years old, a native of Presque Isle, a 13-year English teacher at Cunningham Junior High School, was appointed Skyway Junior High principal. He succeeded Principal Kenneth Marks who resigned to become assistant superintendent of schools in Farmington.
New slate of officers — District Deputy Harry Michaud installed the new slate of officers of the Rev. John J. Harris Council Knights of Columbus after a short business meeting. Attending were Financial Secretary, Cecil Brown; Recorder, Edmond Tardie; Chaplain, Rev. Raymond Gauthier; Grand Knight, Raymond Lynch; Deputy Grand Knight, Roland Jandreau; Warden, Wilfred Cyr; Treasurer, Albert Chasse; Inside Guard, Lowell Lannigan; Trustee, E. Roger Oakes; Trustee, Paul Savard; District Deputy, Harry Michaud; Trustee, Neil E. Michaud; Trustee, Francis Flemming; Advocate, Delsie Jandreau; Outside Guard, Kenneth Goan; and Chancellor, Dana Shaw.
25 Years Ago – July 10, 1991
Wildcat hockey a reality — Presque Isle Hockey supporters reached their $38,000 fund-raising goal and presented a check for first-year costs for a varsity hockey program at Presque Isle High School to SAD 1 Superintendent Gehrig Johnson.
Maine students win first VICA — For the first time ever, two Maine students won medals for the state at the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) national competition in Louisville, Ky. Brian Houle, a 1991 graduate of Northern Maine Community College and a native of Lewiston, won the first-place gold medal in the college-level sheet metal fabrication competition. Preston Hitchcock, a 1991 graduate of Washburn High School, who attended the Presque Isle Regional Vocational Center, won a silver medal in the secondary level carpentry competition.
