PVC honors conference and academic athletes
The Penobscot Valley Conference recently named its all-conference and all-academic choices for the spring sports of track and field, baseball, softball and tennis.
In girls’ track and field for small schools, Caribou’s Jojo Fields made the first team for the 100-meter high hurdles, while in boys, Chathu Karunasiri (3,200-meter run) and Evan Desmond (1,600-meter race walk) made the first team.
Earning berths on the second team for girls were Madeline Gudde in the 800-meter run, Emma Belyea and Kendra Furber in the race walk, Maria Espinosa in the 100 hurdles, Furber in the pole vault, the 4×100 relay team of Espinosa, Sheridan Blackstone, Meagan Dube and Fields and the 4×800 relay team of Blackstone, Sarae Greenier, Gudde and Willow Whitten.
Making the boys’ second team were Elijah Verhoff in the 800, Bryce Coffin and Lukas Lagasse in the race walk, Cory Jandreau in the pole vault, Nick Sleeper in the discus, the 4×400 relay team of Jandreau, Evan Michaud, Caleb Trombley and Verhoff and the 4×800 relay team of Jandreau, Michaud, Richard Newland and Verhoff.
For large schools, Presque Isle’s Tori Koch made the girls’ first team in the 400-meter dash and the second team in the 100. Regan Nelson of the Wildcats made the second team in the shot put and Skyler Vogel made the second team in the javelin.
For boys, PI’s Trace Cyr made the second team in the 400, as did Jonah Clark in the race walk and Connor Murchison in the high jump.
All-academic selections in track and field were not available at presstime.
In baseball, named to the all-conference second team were Caribou’s Michael Hunter and Mason Huck and Presque Isle’s Nick Bartlett.
Hunter and Huck joined Viking teammate Justin Ouellette on the all-academic team, while Sam Gray and Kellsey Michaud (manager) represented Presque Isle.
In softball, Hailey Cameron of PI made the first team and teammate Jillian Flynn the second team. Maddie Doucette of Caribou also made the second team.
Cameron, Flynn, Alyssa Trombley and Taylor Williams were Wildcat players named to the all-academic team, while Jenna Boucher was Caribou’s lone representative.
Tennis Class B all-conference first team choices included the Viking boys’ doubles team of Austin Scott and Bailey Griffeth. Named to the second team were Ethan Plourde of Caribou, Denny Young of PI and the Caribou doubles team of Austin Cheplic and Gabriel Rand.
The Viking boys were recognized as conference runners-up.
John Habeeb of Caribou was named girls’ coach of the year and his Caribou team was the conference champ. Making the first team was Viking single player Gabrielle Marquis, who was also named player of the year, and the doubles team of Ciara Richards and Danielle Hanson.
Conner Spencer and Ashley Matlock, both of the Vikes, earned berths on the second team as singles players, while the doubles team of Hailey Holmquist and Kyra Thibeault also made the second team. Presque Isle’s Michelle Cawley was also named to the second team in singles.
Named to the all-academic team from Caribou was Ethan Plourde, while Tyler Ayotte of Presque Isle was also recognized.
For girls, Cawley was named to the all-academic squad.
