102 Years Ago – July 23, 1914
Surprise birthday party — Mr. G.F. Whidden, the townsman, was the recipient of a pleasant surprise on occasion of his 86th birthday. His friends and neighbors on Epworth Street arranged a picnic supper in the vestry of the M.E. Church.
Branch market — Washburn was congratulated on having the branch market established there by Max Beaulieu, in charge of E.B. Sperry. A delivery cart to cover that section was started from the Washburn branch store.
75 Years Ago – July 24, 1941
Theriault named judge of Northern Aroostook County — Dana L. Theriault of Fort Kent, was appointed by Governor Sumner Sewall as judge of the Northern Aroostook Municipal court to replace Arthur J. Nadeau of Fort Kent, whose four-year term expired.
WPA officials inspect local airfield — Perry A. Fellows, chief engineer of the Works Progress Administration, State Administrator John C. Fitzgerald, William R. Crowell, Maine WPA engineer, Roland Delaware, Crowell’s assistant, and William Paxton, executive secretary of the Maine Aeronautics Commission, made a routine inspection visit to the Presque Isle Airport. His prime purpose was to determine whether the work was progressing on schedule as agreed upon in Washington.
50 Years Ago – July 28, 1966
A&P closes its doors — The Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. Store closed its doors, no longer to be a part of the Main Street scene. This store came to town on Nov. 20, 1920, with James Mackay as manager, who held the position until June 21, 1951, when he retired because of illness. The recent manager was Philip Vance of Presque Isle.
Petrol marketer named — Roger Dunn had been named marketer for the Presque Isle area by Petrolane-Northeast Gas Service, Inc., distributors of Mobil LP-Gas, according to Dave Mathews, Petrolane regional manager. It is a subsidiary of Petrolane Gas Service Inc. of Los Angeles with main offices in Wilton, Conn., operating in almost 200 communities in 11 New England states.
25 Years Ago – July 24, 1991
Rotarian honored — The Damariscotta-Newcastle Rotary Club awarded its highest service honor to Maine Yankee employee Mark Hovey, a Rotarian since 1982 and Presque Isle native. Since becoming a member, Hovey had served in a number of positions within the club, including club president.
New VFW member — Michelle Page, a veteran of Operation Desert Storm, received her official membership in the Ashland Post 9699 of Veterans of Foreign Wars from Post Commander Jerry Dunham. Page was the first female member of the post.
