Bernier takes first place in Spudland Open
Hallett and Newlands win other top awards
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — Lance Bernier shot a 2-under-par 142 to capture overall low gross honors at the 49th annual Coca-Cola Spudland Open golf tournament, held Saturday and Sunday at Presque Isle Country Club.
Bernier, who resides in the Boothbay area, was two strokes better than runner-up Evan McCarthy of Windham, who shot a 144. Last year’s champion and the leader after 18 holes, Jamie Leavitt of Millinocket, posted a 145.
Overall low net went to Greg Hallett of Presque Isle with a 128, while Todd Newlands of Presque Isle captured the J.J. Freeman Award with the low gross score by a member of PICC.

Closest to pin winners on Saturday were, on hole No. 4, Towle, 5 feet; No. 8, Ken Murphy, 2 feet, 2 inches; No. 16, Ian Gervais, 8 inches; and No. 17, Carlson, 2 feet, 4 inches. On Sunday, No. 4, Matt Walsh, 7 inches; No. 8, Brandon McLaughlin, 8 feet, 2 inches; No. 16, Matthew Michaud, hole-in-one; and No. 17, Kevin McKay, 3 feet, 10 inches.
In the long drive contest for the open division, Robbie Watson was first at 305 yards, with Jay Seamans taking second at 304 and Bernier third at 298. For seniors, Mark Richardson was the winner at 295 yards, with Harold Tardy second at 275 and Rick Bouchard third at 271.
