102 Years Ago – July 30, 1914

Fundraiser — At the dance given Saturday evening for the benefit of the High School Lot fund, $10 was raised. Mr. Lee Ferguson and Miss Maude Hammond played the piano. J. E. Sweatt and G.R. Hayward the violin. The ladies sold ice cream and cake and got $5.

Lot purchase — J.J. Hone had purchased of L.S. Bean lot, 46 x 80 feet, on the corner of Second Street and Hall Avenue. The purchased price was $1,500.

75 Years Ago – July 31, 1941

Ashland to have dial phones — The modern dial telephone plant, which telephone men had been building and installing to serve the Ashland exchange, was put into operation, announced Manager Harold G. Brown of the New England Telephone and Telegraph company.

Local Lions capture traveling bell — The famed Aroostook traveling bell was won by the Presque Isle Lions Club at Houlton. Members from the local club that attended the meeting were President, Lawrence J. Hedrich, John Pasqual, F.S. Wood, and J.O. Hanson.

50 Years Ago – August 4, 1966

Local bakery wins trophy — One of the baking industry’s most coveted awards, the “Better Bread” Silver Trophy, was presented to Aroostook Baking Company in recognition of the baking excellence of its Sunbeam bread. Aroostook’s Sunbeam loaf scored first in the competition on such factors as flavor, eating quality, texture, grain, crust and appearance. The competition was conducted in N.Y. City laboratories.

Surprised salesman — Keith Watson of the Presque Isle division of John J. Nissen Baking Corp. was “mighty surprised” when awarded a Zenith 21-inch color TV as top salesman in the company’s Bangor-Brewer, Washington and Aroostook counties section competition. Watson and wife, Carolyn, and two sons live in Westfield.

25 Years Ago – July 31, 1991

Hernandez claims two AAU wrestling championships — James Chico” Hernandez of Presque Isle earned two gold medals at the 1991 AAU Grand National Senior/Masters wrestling championships held July 10-14 at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek, Mich. For the 37-year-old, 180-pound Hernandez, it made five championships in two trips to the national meet, the first appearance coming in 1987. He also earned the outstanding wrestler award in his first attempt at the nationals.

Air bag donation — The Presque Isle Emblem Club No. 521 donated $50 to the Presque Isle Fire Department. President Joyce Sewall presented the funds to Chief Jim Krysiak, Peter Coffin and William Caron for the department’s air bag fund-raising campaign.
