Quilters hold raffle to aid Washburn boy

The Washburn quilting group, A Stitchin’ and a Givin’, have donated a quilt to be raffled off to benefit Ryker McManus.

McManus, the son of Kori and Marshall McManus, recently suffered a lacerated pancreas and is facing surgery and an extended recovery time.
The quilt was made by Anita Dow and measures 68 x 83, and is called Birds and Butterflies.
The quilt is on display at the Washburn Katahdin Trust Bank. Tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5.

Washburn’s 2016 queens were crowned recently, including Haily Campbell, Little Miss Washburn; Alyssa Shackett, Pre-Teen Miss Washburn; Amanda White, Junior Miss Washburn; Reagan Whipkey, Teen Miss Washburn; and Jessica Aube, Miss Washburn.
Campbell, the daughter of Jana and Robert Campbell, performed a dance routine to “Better When I’m Dancing” for her talent. She also won the interview award for the little and pre-teen group. Finley Turner, daughter of Erin and Bradley Turner, was named first runner-up and won the little/pre-teen talent award. She danced to “Mama I’m a Big Girl Now” for her talent.
Other contestants were Hannah Clapper, daughter of Melissa and Ronnie Clapper Jr., who won the little/pre-teen Miss Congeniality Award and sang “Lost Boy,” and Destiny Tilley, daughter of Carol and Jr. Tilley, who danced to “Hey Mickey.”
Shackett, the new pre-teen queen, is the daughter of Laurie and Wayne Shackett. She performed a dance routine to “It’s a Hard Knock Life” for her talent.
White, the junior miss winner, is the daughter of Kelly Wark and Andrew White, Sr. Amanda sang “American Honey” for her talent. She tied for the junior/teen/miss interview award. Tru Drost, daughter of Kristie and John Drost, was named first runner-up and won the junior/teen/miss talent award with her tumbling jazz routine.
Other contestants were Emma Johnston, daughter of Amanda and Danny Churchill and Joshua Johnston, who did a lyrical dance to “Please Don’t Go” and Emerson Turner, daughter of Erin and Bradley Turner, who did a lyrical dance to “Great Unknown”.
Whipkey, the 2016 Teen Miss, is the daughter of Kim and Don Whipkey. She did a gymnastic routine to “Feel the Light” for her talent.
Aube, Miss Washburn 2016, is the daughter of Melinda and the late James Aube. She performed a monologue entitled “Skiing Accident” for her talent. She also won the junior/teen/miss Congeniality Award and tied for the interview award. Brooklyn Plummer, daughter of Jarod and Allyson Plummer and Billie Jo McDonough, was named first runner-up and performed a sign language interpretation of “Fight Song.”
Other contestants were Jacquilin West, daughter of Jane West, who sang “Can’t Help Falling in Love” for talent; Danielle Thompson, daughter of Angela and Terry Thompson, who performed a monologue entitled “Wrong and Ready”; and Kelsey Farr, daughter of Mark and Joyce Farr and Jennifer Farr, who played “My Heart Will Go On” on the keyboard.
Sisters Finley (Little Miss contestant) and Emerson (Jr Miss contestant) Turner were high ticket sales winners.

Church Homecoming

From Aug. 19-21, during August Festival, the Washburn Pentecostal Church will hold a homecoming celebration. They will feature hundreds of pictures, books and documents that relate to the history of the church.
They are hoping to see many people who have been a part of the church throughout the years.

ATV Club events

On Saturday, Aug. 20, there will be an ATV/SUV rodeo at the clubhouse on Gould Street. This will be free to either play or watch. Kids are welcome to try their luck but must wear a helmet if under the age of 18.
Registration begins at 10:30 and the fun begins at 11:30. There will also be a food booth and 50/50 raffle.
On Sunday, Aug. 21, there will be an ATV Poker Run/Ride sponsored by Chandler Farms. Registration is at 9 and the ride begins at 10. The ride will leave from the clubhouse on Gould Street and go around the Scopan Mountain loop and back to the clubhouse for the hands and announcement of the winners.

Salmon Brook update

The Salmon Brook Historical Society will hold a business meeting on Thursday, Aug. 25, at Bill and Carol White’s home at 166 Cross Road in Washburn. This is a potluck meeting.
A reminder that the society is holding a quilt raffle to benefit its two museums. The quilt, called “Summer Play,” is 80 x 92” and tickets are $5 for six or $1 each. Tickets are available at the museums between 1 and 4 Sunday afternoons, during August Fest, or by calling Rita Kingsbury at 429-9359 or Wanita Hallowell at (863) 398-0311.
The drawing will take place at the Sept. 17 baked bean supper, sponsored by the society and the Washburn Rotary Club.
