102 Years Ago – August 27, 1914
A Progressive rally — A Progressive rally was held at Woodman Hall. Among the speakers was Hon. Wm. Sewall, candidate for Sheriff on the Progressive ticket.
Electric sign — John J. Hone installed a very large and noticeable electric sign in front of his theater, a most businesslike enterprise.
75 Years Ago – August 28, 1941
Radio Transmitter Structure — Major W. W. Bowman arrived at the Presque Isle Airport to select a site for the new radio transmitter building. He stated that the approximate size of the building would be 18 by 40 feet and that it would house all the necessary instruments for handling the messages relative to the increased air traffic in upper Aroostook.
Carney retains state picking title — John Carney of Ashland successfully defended his State of Maine Potato Picking title by defeating a crack field of six pickers at the Fairgrounds. Jasper Chase of Westfield, was second. They represented Maine in the Eastern contest at the Eastern States Exposition in Springfield, Mass., viewed by 10,000 persons.
50 Years Ago – September 1, 1966
New editor takes helm — Jonathan von Ranson, 24, originally from New Milford, Conn., newly established editor at the Star-Herald, replaced Jackson C.M. Goolsby, acting editor, who presumed his position as a general manager of Northeast Publishing Company. He and his wife worked in the editorial department of Life Magazine in Armonk, N..Y, before moving to Presque Isle with their 10-month-old son.
Ears for the World — Telstar 11, launched May 7, 1963, continued experiments of Telstar 1, first satellite built and financed by private industry (Bell Laboratories). It provided world with first live television, telephone and teletype transmission between Europe and United States. Later Early Bird was launched, April 6, 1965, by Communications Satellite Corporation, marking the beginning of commercial communications service to Europe via satellite.
Future farmers honored — The Maine Potato Growers honored Milton Smith and Jeff Hemphill from the Presque Isle FFA chapter at their annual meeting held at Presque Isle High School, Aug. 25, 1966.
25 Years Ago – August 28, 1991
Elected to AHA board — Deborah Adams, R.N., of Presque Isle was re-elected to a second term on the American Heart Association, Maine Affiliate’s board of directors for the central Aroostook Division. Elections were held at the affiliate’s annual meeting in Augusta. The statewide board has 50 members. Aroostook County’s northern, southern and central divisions were among eight community organizations in Maine.
Lady Panthers remain perfect at 5-0 — The Central Aroostook Lady Panthers kept their unblemished mark intact with a 1-0 win over Washburn in Eastern Maine Class D school girls soccer action. Lady Panther Jill Bradstreet scored the only goal of the game 6:40 into the second half on a direct kick about 35 yards out, just over Washburn keeper Ami Lavway’s reach.
