Washburn celebrates August Fest

The August Festival Committee extends its appreciation to all attendees, vendors, crafters, and sponsors for a safe and successful August Festival 2016.
Thanks go to Festival King and Queen Fred and Helen Tompkins, parade participants and organizers, and two groups celebrating their 100th anniversaries: the Washburn Pentecostal Church, who were the parade grand marshalls, and the Washburn Fire Department, as they provided many family activities, invited the Forest Service helicopter for a demonstration, and capped off the festival with a fireworks display.
In order to make it great again next year, there will be a wrap-up meeting Wednesday, Aug. 31, at 7 p.m. at the Rec Center. Everyone is welcome, as “many hands make light work.”
The annual August Festival Parade, coordinated by Danny and Amanda Churchill, drew a crowd Saturday, Aug. 20, to enjoy the event.
The Washburn Pentecostal Church also came away with the trophy for Best Overall. Other prizes were given to the Washburn High School Class of 1956, whose schoolroom-themed float won the Best Use of Theme award; Pines Health Services, which won Best Musical Float; and Bonnie and Wesley Folsom, who won Best Antique Vehicle.

Bike and Baby Parade
The August Festival’s Bike and Baby Parade occurred Aug. 19 in the Pines Health Center parking lot on Main Street. Owen and Kaylee Rackliffe took first place in the Baby Parade with their “Best Catch of the Day” costume.
Other contestants included: Riley Dyer, who was awarded Most Creative; Lydia Brown, The Cutest; the brother duo Camden and Carter Hitchcock, Most Original; and Carrigan King, Most Decorative award.
Nicole Dyer won first place in the 5 years and under group and Colton Sperry received the second-place prize. Winning first place in the 6 and older group was Jenesa Ingraham.
This event was coordinated by Kimberly Whipkey and trophies were presented by Teen Miss Washburn Raegan Whipkey.
Flag Ceremony
On Tuesday, Aug. 23, there was a flag retirement ceremony at Story Park in Washburn, where community organizations presented flags that were worn and ready for “retirement” for a respectful final viewing.
This event was put on by the local American Legion Post 48 members. Boy Scout Troop 177 and Cub Scout Pack 162 of Washburn assisted in the ceremony, and the Washburn Rotary Club provided refreshments.
The evening began with a hot dog roast followed by the viewing of the flags.
T-shirt fundraiser
Second-grader Ryker McManus, son of Marshall and Kori McManus, was severely injured during summer vacation and has spent the past month in the hospital, including being treated at Boston Children’s Hospital.
T-shirts, designed by his sister Brooklyn, are being sold to support Ryker’s recovery and provide financial support for the family. Support Ryker by wearing this T-shirt on the day he returns to school; the date is still uncertain.
Washburn District Elementary School students have been sent home with an order form. T-shirts are $10 and range in size from 2T to adult XXL. School order forms are to be returned by Friday, Sept. 2. Orders can also be taken at Washburn Trailside with an option to pay via PayPal at http://paypal.me/afields85 and are due by Sept. 16. Cash and checks made out to Amber Fields will be accepted.

Quilt show
“Summer Play, an 80-by-92 quilt, is the prize in a raffle to benefit the Salmon Brook Historical Society and its Wilder Homestead and Agricultural Museums, located at 17 Main Street. Tickets are available at $1 each or 6 for $5.
Tickets may be purchased via mail by sending checks to Rita Kingsbury, P.O. Box 475, Washburn, ME 04786. Include your name and phone number. Upon receipt of money, books of tickets will be made and deposited.
The drawing is scheduled for Sept. 17 at the conclusion of the baked bean supper, taking place from 5-7 p.m. at the Trailrunners Clubhouse. Cost: Adults, minimum $7 donation; under 12, any donation. Take-out will be available. All are welcome.
