Gray celebrates 90th birthday
According to the United States census data, only 1.6 percent of Americans are men 90 or above. On Sunday, July 31, Hughie Gray became a part of that statistic by turning 90 and his family celebrated that fact with approximately 80 of his relatives, neighbors, friends and church family members at the Easton Pentecostal Church. A moving time of tributes, music, laughter and tears made Hughie’s birthday a great one to remember.
The birthday festivities kicked off with a video playing 1920s music and displaying various pictures from Hughie’s life. His youngest son, Chris Gray, served as the emcee for the event setting the stage with humor and honor as he pointed out that according to the Internet, there is no one else in the United States with the name “Hughie Allen Gray” therefore it could be said of him he is “truly one of a kind.”
Chris’ older brother, Alan, gave a heart-felt tribute as well, thanking his father for the lasting legacy he has provided for him and his own family. Likewise, Hughie’s daughters, Colleen Tracz and Tammy Wright, shared heart-warming stories and humor concerning their father. Hughie’s pastor, Rev. Merritt Durost, praised Hughie’s character and said that there were two people from Easton during his ministry that he would like to emulate in his life. The first was the late Milton Flewelling and the other was Hughie Gray.
Many other encouraging tributes were shared by others such as Hughie’s nephew, Gaylen Flewelling and his wife Joan, neighbor Mike Corey, cousin Marjorie Neely, daughter-in-law Joanne Gray, and church member Cheryl Carter. Hughie then blessed the people in attendance by singing and playing harmonica, after which people gathered for a delicious lunch and birthday cake.
Regionally, Hughie is well known as a retired farmer, a singer, harmonica player and an all-around friendly man with a great personality and a love for laughter. He hardly knows a stranger and that fact made this celebration exceedingly special.
Minus two years during the Korean War, Hughie Gray has been a lifelong resident of Easton for and he has been a part of the Easton Pentecostal Church since he was born, serving in multiple ways through the years.
Those who would like to send Hughie a birthday card in honor of his birthday can send it to 393 Fuller Road, Easton, ME, 04740. Hughie’s family would like to say “thank you” to all who helped to make their father’s birthday a special celebration.
