Garden tour benefits local food pantry
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Grace Interfaith Food Table (GIFT) of Presque Isle recently harvested a donation from some local gardens, thanks to a unique event.
Four local churches worked with gardeners to present a tour on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2016 with all proceeds going to GIFT to help feed those in need. The sponsoring churches were the Grant Memorial Methodist Church, Presque Isle Congregational Church, St. John’s Episcopal Church and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Participants purchased tickets and were able to visit any combination of the six gardens. According to the director of volunteers at GIFT, Charlene Buzza, the event was a very successful endeavor.
Gardeners involved were Tammy Walton, Terri Kilcollins, Anne Hemphill, Suzanne Hews, Roberta Griffiths and Myrtle Tree.
The weather held off and approximately 50 people turned out to see perennial, shade and other varieties of gardens. Organizers said each garden was different and reflected the personalities of each gardener.
GIFT provides food aid in the communities of Presque Isle, Mapleton, Castle Hill, Chapman and Crouseville, serving an average of 150 families each month, Buzza said.
