Graves and Beckum are Labor Day champs
CARIBOU, Maine — Thirty nine runners laced up their sneakers for the annual Caribou Labor Day 8K Road Race and a pair of Caribou residents came away with titles.
The event, held Monday on a course that began and ended at the Caribou High School track, has been around longer than any other road race in Aroostook County.
Evan Graves captured the men’s and overall title with a time of 28 minutes and 3 seconds. He was 1:07 ahead of runner-up Isaiah Brown of Houlton, who crossed the line in 29:10.
Evan Desmond of Caribou (30:20) was third, Joey Bard of Caribou (30:51) fourth and Dylan Marerro of Woodland (31:30) fifth.
For the women, Marie Beckum of Caribou grabbed the top spot in 35:16, with Kim Wright of Mapleton (36:17) second and Angela Ewings of Littleton (37:06) third.
Nadeen and Mike Plourde, both from Caribou, were the only walkers. Nadeen came in at 41:30 and Mike at 44:04.
Age division winners were: Teagan Ewings (40:35), 14-and-under female; Brown, 15-18 male; Madeline Gudde (38:53), 15-18 female; Bard, 19-29 male; Paul Johnson (31:36), 30-39 male; Katie Malone (38:23), 30-39 female; J. Ewings, 40-49 male; A. Ewings, 40-49 female; Bruce Clark (33:11), 50-59 male; Wright, 50-59 female; Ed Malone (38:49), 60-69 male; Connie McLellan (49:02), 60-69 female; and Jim Nesbitt (51:46), 70-and-over male.
The race was one of the legs in the County Challenge Racing Series — an annual seven-race series sponsored by the Aroostook Musterds which kicked off in February.
