Turkish citizen crosses border
A man from Turkey who was found crossing the U.S.-Canadian border in May has been sentenced to 3-and-half months in prison and a $2,000 fine, and will likely face deportation.
Tayfun Remzi Reis, 61, of Istanbul, Turkey, was sentenced Tuesday, Sept. 6 in U.S. District Court by Judge John Woodcock, Jr. to 3-and-half months in prison and fined $2,000 for unlawfully re-entering the U.S. after having been removed from the country, according to a media release from U.S. attorney Thomas Delahanty II.
On May 30, Reis was found by a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Blaine after he allegedly crossed the border from Canada.
According to court documents, Reis was found covered by branches and when met by an agent identified himself as an American citizen with a New Jersey driver’s license and different name. A subsequent fingerprint check showed that Reis was a citizen of Turkey and was previously removed from the U.S. in 1998, for unspecified reasons, according to the media release.
Reis will face deportation after his sentence.
