Owl athletics weekly results

The University of Maine at Presque Isle cross country teams saw their first action Saturday, competing in the Husson Invitational held in Bangor.

The men’s and women’s soccer teams and the volleyball squads continued on with their regular season schedules.

Cross country

The UMPI men placed fifth in the six-team field, scoring 127 points. Senior Sully Jackson was 12th out of 50 runners with a 27:04.2 clocking on the 4.3-mile course. Trevor Levesque, a junior, was the next fastest Owl, placing 15th in 27:33. Andrew Hunt came in 31st with a time of 30:54. Terrance Reidy and Dylan Hartford rounded out the UMPI scorers, taking 34th and 35th, respectively.
The Owl women’s team had only three competitors involved, with sophomore Chenoa Jackson completing the 2.9-mile course in 25:51. She placed 29th in the 40-runner field, while teammate Elise Gudde came in at 29:30.

Men’s soccer

Three more losses were absorbed by the UMPI men this past week, beginning with last Wednesday’s 8-0 home defeat to UM-Fort Kent and continuing with a 9-4 loss at UM-Machias Friday and a 5-0 loss at Maine Maritime Academy Sunday.
Coach Alan Gordon’s team is now 0-5 on the campaign.
In the loss to the Clippers, sophomore Cody Blair scored a first-half goal and assisted on another off the foot of senior Derek Healy, but the Owls still trailed at intermission, 6-2.
Brandon Danforth and Sean Barbosa tallied second-half goals for UMPI, but it wasn’t enough.
The Owls are back to work Friday with a match at Unity College. On Sunday, they host Fisher College at 2 p.m. at Park Family Field.

Women’s soccer

The Owl women are now 0-3 following Saturday’s 8-0 loss to Maine Maritime Academy in the home opener.
The Mariners scored in the sixth minute, courtesy of Emil Wyman’s unassisted goal, and never looked back. UMPI head coach Trevor Parent took the blame for the lopsided loss.
“I did not prepare our team to play MMA at the level they are playing at,” Parent said. “In the second half, we strengthened our resolve, but the first half is on me.”
UMPI’s scheduled home game against Thomas College Sunday was postponed. The team is at Unity Friday and then hosts Fisher College (Mass.) Sunday at noon.

Volleyball

The UMPI volleyball team gave Pine Manor all it wanted Saturday in a match hosted by Becker College and held in Worcester, Mass. The Owls fell in the five-setter, 25-14, 25-22, 20-25, 24-26, 15-2.
Sara Boles had a kill and Esmeralda Galvan came up with a service ace as UMPI rallied from a seven-point deficit to win the fourth set and force a fifth.
Hannah Williams had 14 kills and 18 digs and Abby Jewett notched 13 kills and 24 digs for UMPI.
The Owls were beaten by host Becker in three sets, 25-16, 25-21, 25-9. Laura Aroz had 10 assists for UMPI, while Jewett had seven kills and 11 digs. Williams and Galvan combined for 29 digs in the loss.
UMPI travels to Standish for the St. Joseph’s College Autumn Invitational Friday and Saturday.
