PI, Washburn join for unique XC meet
CARIBOU, Maine — A cross country meet at Caribou High School on Saturday featured a unique format.
The No. 1 runners from all the teams competed against each other in a race held on the five-kilometer course, followed by the No. 2s and No. 3s, all the way down to the No. 7s.
The talented Orono Red Riots made the trip north and turned in dominating efforts. The Orono girls took first in six of the seven races to accumulate 51 points and the Orono boys claimed victories in five of the seven en route to a 61-point total.
The Presque Isle girls placed sixth and the boys were seventh. The Washburn boys had a full team and placed eighth.
Also competing were Penobscot Valley Conference teams Caribou, John Bapst, Old Town, Ellsworth, Foxcroft Academy and Hermon, along with Class C County programs Fort Kent, Houlton, Hodgdon, GHCA and Katahdin.
Wildcat girls’ results were as follows: No. 1, Madison Jandreau, fifth, 19:48.36; No. 2, Isabelle Jackson, fourth, 20:47.38; No. 3, no finisher; No. 4, Eleanor Goheen, ninth, 25:20.34; No. 5, Madelyn Wing, fourth, 25:05.96; No. 6, Stephanie Donovan, seventh, 28:13.11; and No. 7, no finisher.
Washburn results: No. 1, Kassandra Farley, eighth, 20:37.38; No. 2, Maggie Castonguay, ninth, 23:32.89; No. 3, Mollie Clark, ninth, 25:29.53; No. 4, Samantha White, 10th, 27:22.93; No. 5, Samantha Churchill, sixth, 27:49.63; No. 6, no finisher; and No. 7, no finisher.
In the boys’ meet, the PI results were: No. 1, Trace Cyr, 10th, 18:18.98; No. 2, Max Bartley, sixth, 18:09.2; No. 3, Brandon McKnight, fifth, 18:38.33; No. 4, Joshua Ashton, eighth, 20:32.01; No. 5, Jonah Clark, fifth, 19:00.73; No. 6, Owen McQuarrie, fifth, 20:22.29; and No. 7, Ian Hoyt-Franz, fifth, 21:21.49.
“The team is improving every meet,” said Wildcat boys’ coach Evan Graves. “The meet was a little different and allowed different kids to shine. It was a fun meet that helped to push the kids a little more.
“Based on the distance, the kids really have improved from the week before and it’s great to see the gains,” Graves added, noting that Bartley and Clark made the biggest strides. “The team is coming along. They are getting into shape and the kids are understanding the concepts of running more and they are pushing themselves hard, which is great.”

Presque Isle will host all Aroostook County schools in a meet Friday beginning at 3:30 p.m.
