Development center opens

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The University of Maine Presque Isle has partnered with MMG Insurance to open a new space devoted to workforce development.

The MMG Center for Professional Development opened this week in the first floor of UMPI’s Kelley Commons, as a 1,000-square foot space devoted to workforce training, continuing education and certification programs.
With $50,000 donated by MMG Insurance and a $10,000 grant from the Maine Community Foundation, the center includes video conferencing, an interactive smart board, and an adaptable learning space.
“We are so pleased to establish the MMG Center for Professional Development and create a close-to-home option for employees looking to complete highly specialized training and advanced certifications,” said UMPI Interim President Ray Rice in a media release. “This center will serve as the region’s hub for enrichment and certification, and potentially graduate level offerings, and the generous gifts we received from MMG Insurance and the Maine Community Foundation make the space highly interactive and tech-forward.”
Among other offerings, the center is collaborating with the University of Southern Maine to host risk management and other insurance-related courses that would be of use for MMG employees, or others in the industry. UMPI has already been offering continuing education and professional course as part of a collaboration with employers.
“We are pleased to make this investment in increasing the opportunities to build upon our strong, talented County workforce,” MMG President and CEO Larry Shaw said in a media release. “Eliminating the barrier of travel in the delivery of training and development for area employers while leveraging the broader curriculum of the UMaine System is essential for continued growth.”
