September 17, 1914

Fair pictures and films — Pres. Guiou received word from Mr. Wade, the moving picture photographer, that the pictures taken at the Fair time were OK and the films were shown in Presque Isle, a feature of unusual interest and attraction, and undoubtedly drew big houses.

New job — Miss Bertha Henderson accepted a position in the New York Store. She was familiar with the garment line, and a great assistance to Mrs. Emma Ryder in that department of The New York Store.

September 18, 1941

Baker elected Aroostook Banking head — Sixty members of the Aroostook County Bankers’ Association met at the Aroostook Valley Country Club for a luncheon session and elected Lester Baker of Houlton as president of the association. Other officers were Fred S. Kilburn, cashier of the First National bank of Fort Fairfield, vice president; and Charles A. Nutter, manager of the Northern National bank of Mars Hill, secretary-treasurer.

Foster elected head of Washburn High — William C. Foster of Princeton, had been elected principal of Washburn High School to replace Horace C. Porter, who resigned to become principal at Kittery. Mr. Foster, a graduate of Ricker Classical Institute at Houlton and of Colby College, in 1932, had attended two summer sessions at the University of Maine and taught nine years at Princeton, being principal the last five years.

September 22, 1966

Nursing and Recuperation Home — Ronald Coffin of Rockport, Mass., who owned four nursing homes in Mass., son of Mr. and Mrs. Jasper Coffin of Presque Isle, intended to build a $500,000 nursing home east of Gould Memorial Hospital on Academy Street, PI, containing 80 beds, and employng about 60 people.

Recognized — Don Thompson and Lyman Barnes were presented with certificates of appreciation at a City Council Meeting by Frederick Lunt, chairman of the council. Retired, Thompson had served on the Police Department from 1945-66, and Barnes 1951-65.

Carr probate candidate — James D. Carr, 31, of Houlton and the chairmanship of the Republican Committee of Houlton, was nominated at a Republican County Committee meeting in Fort Fairfield to be the Republican candidate for Judge of Probate of Aroostook County.

IGA store opened — The largest grocery store north of Bangor, Smythe’s IGA Plus, opened in Presque Isle with crowds of curious shoppers flooding the extra-wide aisles. For the younger set, the store offered kid-sized grocery carts and eye-level merchandise.

Lady Bears stop SAHS, 2-1 — The Easton High School varsity soccer teams closed out their pre-harvest schedules with the Southern Aroostook Warriors of Dyer Brook at Easton. In the school girl contest, Rene Chalou scored two first-half goals to lead the Lady Bears past SAHS, 2-1. Marcy Lamoreau and Deedra Ireland assisted on Chalou’s goals. In the net, Patti Driscoll had 18 saves on 19 Lady Warrior attempts.

Ribbon-cutting ceremony — The ACAP Pre-school Center in Caribou held a ribbon-cutting ceremony along with an open house for their new facility which housed the Caribou Head Start and the East Coast Migrant Head Start. On hand for the ceremony were Judy Enman, Caribou Chamber of Commerce; Mark Goughan, vice president Chamber of Commerce; Brian Thibeau, executive director of ACAP; Sara and Mateo Gutierrez, parent group officers; and Belinda Carter, director of ACAP Pre-School Services.
