Panthers qualify as a team for state golf tournament
Three Tigers will play as individuals
The Central Aroostook Panthers earned a berth into the state team championships and Fort Fairfield golfers Jon Bernard, Sara Edgecomb and Sadie Edgecomb have qualified for the state individual event.
This was determined at the Aroostook County Championships/Regional Qualifier, held Friday at Houlton Community Golf Course.
The Panthers will compete at Natanis Golf Club in Vassalboro Oct. 8, while the Tiger trio will be in the individual tourney Oct. 15, also at Natanis.
Central Aroostook registered a score of 420 to place second only to Hodgdon, which came in with a 413. Both teams ousted Fort Fairfield (429) and Southern Aroostook (468). The Tigers had won the last seven County titles.
“I was extremely proud of the team,” said Panther coach Adam Metzler. “I came into the season expecting a rebuilding/transition year as we had three returning players and two that have played very, very little, but the three returning players (Shane Stackpole, Tyson Cyr and Ted Wheeler) showed great improvement throughout the season and Tyson and Ted shot just about 20 strokes lower than their County Championship scores from last year.
“The team plays well together and is very supportive of each other while having a good time,” he added.
Stackpole led CA with a 96, while Cyr had a 101 and Wheeler a 112. Isabelle Wright came within a stroke of qualifying for the schoolgirl state championships with a round of 111. Taia Tilley was the Panthers other golfer.
For Fort Fairfield, Bernard shot an 89, one stroke clear of the minimum qualifying score and the same score he had at last year’s qualifier. He joined Hodgdon’s Ben Tuttle, who shot an 82, as the only boys to qualify for the individual states.
Sara Edgecomb shot a 100 and Sadie Edgecomb a 101 as the twin sisters will both return to the state event.
The Presque Isle golf team continued regular season play with several matches. The latest was played at Barnes Brook in Enfield Monday and the Wildcats shot a 182 as a team to finish 26 strokes behind Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln and 50 ahead of Penobscot Valley High School of Howland.
Hunter Flynn led the way with a 39, while both Seth Roy and John Saucier carded 47s. Libby Boone followed with a 49. The Wildcats are now 7-7 on the regular season.
