Understanding a pup’s language

Canines and humans have a long history of being extremely adaptable friends, open to learning all they can from us and working hard to fit into our world. We owe it to our canine companions to learn a little of their language.

Listening: A subtle tilted head and softly wagging tail say, “I’m all ears!”
Friendly: There’s the pointed-ears and wiggly-body “I’m feeling happy” look!
Playful: We all know the “Really, you should drop everything and throw me that ball” look, known as the play bow position.
Alert: Dogs have an incredible sense of hearing. An erect neck and perked-up ears tell us that they are well aware of what’s going on. Amazingly, dogs can locate the source of a sound in six-hundredths of a second!
It was great seeing all those folks that came out to our two events over the Sept. 17-18 weekend. The Pet Appreciation Day at Tractor Supply gave us the opportunity to showcase our “senior” kitties! We offered a name your price special and we were extremely happy to have four senior cats find a new family to call their own. We truly do appreciate Tractor Supply’s generosity and opening their business and hearts to help the animals.
On Sunday we were invited to set up a booth at the first ever Caribou Marathon qualifying event. With the early rain, all the booths were moved inside the beautiful Community Wellness Center. There were several live bands that played and lots of food and vendors that greeted the crowds. Over 400 runners from 16 states participated in the Marathon and Mother Nature cooperated and turned into a beautiful warm day. We got to meet and talk with visitors, sold our new T-shirt design and were happy to show off our banner with our new logo!
Our next event will be the Fall Arts, Craft & Collectible Show at the Forum on October 1 and 2nd. We will be having a Bake Sale, raffle, along with all our Shelter merchandise. Be sure to stop by and say “hello”!
Just a reminder, that we are still collecting your gently used shoes that will help us raise money for the shelter animals. If you are a business, why not put a box out for your employees to donate their shoes. Call us and we can pick up any larger donations!
Please check out what pets are up for adoption at petfinders.com or on the shelter Facebook page. You can also stop by the Central Aroostook Humane Society. Our hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., closing for lunch 12 — 12:30 p.m.
Please be responsible, spay or neuter your pets.
