Peak fall foliage in Presque Isle is behind the past years, according to the National Weather Service.
An employee of the National Weather Service in Caribou has been documenting the fall foliage views of Hanson Lake in Presque Isle.
The turning of the leaves’ colors is somewhat ahead of last year, but behind 2012 and 2013, according to the NWS, which shared the photos on Facebook.
Fall foliage depends much on temperatures and the arrival of frost and freezing, with cooler Septembers bringing earlier foliage.
According to the NWS, this past September, the average temperature was a bit cooler than last September – 58 degrees compared to 61 degrees – although the first frost arrived on Sept. 16, 10 days ahead of the first 2015 frost.
