Voters approve SAD 1 budget

A third budget proposed for Maine School Administrative District 1’s 2016-17 school year won the support of a majority of voters in the five member communities, after a backlash to high proposed increases.

In total, 845 people voted on the $24.59 million spending package, with 53 percent voting in favor of it. The budget is 2.4 percent more than last year, with a 1.8 percent increase in the five communities’ annual tax assessment, or a 0.9 percent increase for the average municipal year.

The budget’s overall increase of 2.4 percent is less than last year’s, and continues existing teaching positions without any increases in class sizes.

Looking ahead, the SAD 1 board of directors will soon be discussing the 2017-18 and long-term issues facing the district amid declining enrollment. The board next meets on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at Mapleton Elementary School at 5:30 p.m.
